Welcome to English 10! This year is really a transition point in English language arts. English 9 eases you in. English 10 determines where you are headed after this point: Core English classes or Advanced Placement. We will be studying various texts and forms of literary expression. You will build your reading comprehension by paying closer attention to literary frameworks, strategies, and patterns. You will continue to work on composition and presentation skills. You will expand your academic vocabulary and develop your use of the language. We have a lot to cover this year... perhaps you'll find something interesting along the way. If not, we are trekking through it anyway. Below you will find the syllabus for this course.

PERTINENT RESOURCES.
Below you will find resources that might prove useful throughout the academic school year. In the left column, you can locate the powerpoint presentations for the 55 literary devices that we will refer to, analyze, and study throughout the texts we read. In the second column, you will find helpful review resources, including an overview of the primary literary movements in American literature, a short story unit review, and a recap of the various points-of-view in any given narrative. The last column is comprised of a literary movements handout that shows the parallels and discrepancies between movements in the United States and Great Britain, a comprehensive list of literary devices and corresponding definitions, as well as a quick reference guide for close reading and annotations.

FIRST QUARTER.
PERSONAL NARRATIVE & THAT ONE REALLY LONG EPIC POEM.
Spotlight Text(s): Short Stories & The Odyssey by Homer
Spotlight Composition: Personal Narrative
Spotlight Composition: Personal Narrative
During the first quarter, we will be focusing on the overarching "literary analysis" and personal narrative learning objective. The first few weeks will revolve around re-sharpening your skills in the English language arts through short analyses of Homer's Greek epic poem, The Odyssey, and other works to really exemplify what this course is all about. While many of these shorter works do not seem thematically linked, it is my hope that you will begin to see the patterns in literature and the formulas literary scholars employ to deduct, decipher, and conclude the meaning of a text. On the other hand, The Odyssey by Homer, is an epic poem chronicling the adventures of Greek tragic hero, Odysseus, as he returns to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The second half of the quarter will revolve around developing your skills in narrative writing- specifically personal narrative writing.

Spotlight Composition: Research Paper
Spotlight Composition: Research Paper
For the second quarter, we will focus on The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. We'll be discussing the category of nonfiction and the idea of civil rights beyond the stereotypical scope. We will debate whether or not a memoir is "nonfiction" or "first fiction." We will consider the role research plays in both understanding/interpreting literature and writing/creating literary productions. The major composition (written assignment) of the semester will be a formal research paper for the World Food Prize.

Spotlight Composition: Timed Argumentative Essay
During the third quarter, we will begin with an overview of rhetorical analysis, the difference between persuasive writing and argumentative writing, an introduction to the SOAPSTone method, a crash course on the Irish thesis statement, and a review of the advanced expository writing structure. You'll have a timed argumentative essay. Then, we'll shift gears and begin reading Octavia E. Butler's Kindred, a work of historical and science fiction that recounts the ancestry of chattel slavery and the heritage of historical trauma. The protagonist time travels to the past to save her ancestors and learns many lessons along the way. The second half of the quarter and the first half of the fourth quarter will step into A Mid-Summer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. It has fairies, complicated lovers, love juice, and a donkey head. Get ready for reader's theatre.

FOURTH QUARTER.
READER'S THEATRE, PERFORMANCE LITERATURE, & POETRY (oh... and ISTEP).
For the fourth and final quarter, after a plethora of literature with struggles and perils, I want to end the academic year on a positive and uplifting note: a Shakespearean comedy & a poetry unit. The writing assessment for the final quarter will be your ISTEP assessment (and current graduation requirement for high school). If time permits, we will also cover some creative writing prompts to combat the stress invoked by the ISTEP testing.
Spotlight Text(s): A Mid-Summer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare (continued); Poetry Unit
Spotlight Composition: ISTEP Testing will suffice.
